Abstract
This essay attempts to identify the most prominent works published in the English language concerning comic books and newspaper comic strips. Although an abundance of books in Japanese and European languages exist, they are not considered here because of their lack of availability in most libraries in the United States. Key representative scholarship published in English about non-American comics is featured throughout this essay to counter the parochial level of most of the study in the United States.
This bibliographic essay identifies key English-language books about comic books and comic strips that will be valuable to both scholars and general readers. In keeping with trends toward globalized scholarship, it includes works published in the United States and abroad and works about both American and non-U.S. comics. The essay is divided into two main parts: the first deals with reference titles, the second theory and criticism. Subdivisions within each section further discuss particular types of resources.
