Abstract
By proposing a case study based on the comic book 'Le bleu est une couleur chaude' and drawing an intermedial comparison to its film adaptation, 'La vie d'Adéle', Véronique Sina explores how the queer (inter)mediality of the comics forms holds the potenial to produce counternarratives that can lead to acts of transgression. In 'The Queer (Inter)Mediality of Comics: Coming Out and Coming of Age in Le bleu est une couleur chaude and La vie D'Adéle', Sina focuses on strategies of remediation to suggest that the queer, intermedial aesthetics of comics allows for an exchange between visibility and invisibility that is not readily available to film because of its documentary aesthetics. This exchange, in turn, is at the heart of the political work comics can do. In contrast to its film adaptation, 'Le bleu est une couleur chaude' enineers queer images and engages a queer aesthetics that fall outside of the patriarchal order, thus promoting the medium's transgressive potential. Sina's contribution defines the aesthetics of comics as at once both queer and intermedial to argue that comics' potential to foster real-world change is held in the medium's unique aesthetics.
