Abstract
The text explores the complexities surrounding the beginning of a bande dessinée (BD) and what determines it—be it the text, images, medium, or audience. In Jean Dytar's BD #J'Accuse!, the concept of the beginning is examined through a unique unboxing experience, where readers must first open a box resembling a notebook to access the BD. This raises questions about the nature of beginnings in comics, especially when augmented reality (AR) elements are introduced via smartphones or tablets. The text discusses how these digital components can either extend the narrative across different media or signify the start of a new narrative altogether. The author aims to analyze the beginning of BDs, focusing on two key spaces: the paratextual space between the cover and the text, and the intradiegetic space between the BD and digital simulations. The analysis will draw on comic theory and historical context regarding AR in BDs, examining how these elements influence narrative beginnings. The text also highlights the lack of focus on beginnings in comic studies, attributing this to the inherent sequentiality of comics, which complicates the identification of a clear starting point. It suggests that the multimodal nature of comics creates a blend of beginning and non-beginning elements, challenging traditional narrative structures. Ultimately, the text proposes that while AR offers new possibilities for narrative and reception, it often results in additive rather than transformative storytelling. The interaction with AR elements invites readers to engage more actively, positioning them as agents in the narrative experience. This leads to further questions about the implications of interactivity and the evolving nature of beginnings in contemporary comics.
