Abstract |
This paper analyzes the portrayal of masculinity in American superhero comics, particularly through the character of Spider-Man, using feminist and critical theory perspectives. It argues that superhero narratives often embody a hypermasculine ideal that reinforces cultural norms emphasizing strength, autonomy, and emotional reservation. The analysis highlights the tension between the indelible influence of culturally constructed masculinity and the emerging understanding of responsibility and ethical action, culminating in the conclusion that art can transcend ideological binaries.
