This article deals with the concept of ›nonnarrative‹ in comics. It first discusses pros and cons of the current terminology, and then moves to a semiotic approach (structural as well as tensive semiotics) in order to propose a new take that aims at reintroducing narrative in contexts that seem to exclude it. The second part of the article is devoted to a brief discussion of the work of Oliver Deprez, an experimental woodcut comics and book artist, whose magazine HOLZ illustrates some of the most interesting tendencies in today’s storytelling.
