Abstract

The sociology of literature is occupied with written and printed materials, the sociology of art with auditive and visual things; what finds wide distribution in the public, is of interest for the perspective of mass communication. Comics as phenomenon and object of analysis seem to belong at the same time in all and none of these three realms. Normally, they are not looked at as “literature” – though they are read by many people, they are not looked at as “art” – though they are visual performances; and the mass communication-research has not at all fully analyzed the importance of that medium. In the article three sociologically relevant questions are discussed: 1) How can the “relevant public” of Comics be identified – who are their readers? 2) To what degree are Comics mirror-images of our society? 3) How is the relevance of Comics with a “message” – are there “serious” Comics?
