Abstract
This article addresses the tension between queerness and canonicity using two literary adaptations by the Austrian comic author Nicolas Mahler. Queer serves as an aesthetic and political category for analyzing the pretexts by H.C. Artmann, Lewis Carroll, and Elfriede Jelinek. The article focuses on their queer quality and its relation to canonicity and then examines Mahler’s adaptations in light of the queer aspects of the source material. Finally, queer is defined as an emancipatory category that allows the margins of the canon to be explored and the normativity of the canon to be challenged.
