This chapter overviews the graphic novel as a medium for social engagement, and introduces a recent socially committed Latin American sequential art and finish with an analysis of protagonization of Afro-Brazilians in Marcelo d'Salete's works Encruzilhada and Cumbe. D'Salete was born and still lives in the Brazilian metropolis of Sao Paulo, which became one of the main settings for his graphic narratives. In his drawings, d'Salete reveals and documents the problematic sides of urban culture that affect his protagonists' lives: social inequalities, violence, discrimination and racism, a path the author continued in his later works Encruzilhada and the graphic story "Risco".
