Abstract
This chapter focusses on the practices of multilingual publishing in Finnish comics. Ralf Kauranen examines their implications for linguistic borders in comics culture on an institutional level and in comics as a multimodal art form, and he suggests a typology of different ways of presenting a comic multilingually. Bi- or multilingual publishing de-borders comics culture and strengthens transnational tendencies, while the practices simultaneously reproduce other borders. In relation to the multimodal framework of representation that is characteristic of comics, Kauranen sheds light on how the connections between verbal and visual are formed in different ways based on the chosen practice of multilingual presentation: these both invite variegated reading paths connected to the linguistic competencies of different reader positions and posit textual elements in different languages in distinct relation to the visuality of the comics page.
