Abstract
[Abstract in English below]

In this article I examine the Italian publishing industry of comics, casting light on its complexity and hybridity. First, I show the current lack of a distinct publishing industry, which is instead comprised of two markets – that of the graphic novel and that of the serial comic books – that differ in terms of format, distribution channel, and user. While serial comics generate more titles and sell more copies, the graphic novel format enjoys much more cultural and media success. For this reason, the graphic novel has finally been included in editorial and market analyses; however, by considering only one of the formats in which comics are produced and published, these studies propose an inadequate overview of the publishing industry. Even though we still do not have enough tools to analyze the publishing industry of comics as a whole, it is important to keep into consideration the various parts that constitute it. Only in doing so we can account for those publishing companies that produce both graphic novels and serial comics, or those products that change their format to fit the different markets. In the following pages, I analyze and compare the data referring to the production (publishers, titles, print run) and the market (suppliers, distribution channels, revenues) of graphic novels as well as serial comics in order to provide useful methods, tools, and information for familiarizing scholars with the publishing industry of comics.
