Abstract |
Popular American comic books were driven by Jewish creators, many of whom had firsthand understanding of the Holocaust. Exactly how did they acknowledge the Holocaust, influence popular understanding and negotiate antisemitism in the medium? Using Henry Bial’s typology of ‘assimilation’, ‘imaginary Jew’ and ‘being seen’, this article explores the manner through which they responded to the Holocaust, mirroring other popular culture. In Joe Kubert whose 60-year career increasingly focused on the Holocaust as his own word memorial, we see his becoming increasingly ‘seen’ through his work, and finally in his co-creation, Sgt Rock.
