When combining music with visual images and narrative, certain principles tend to apply across all media: film, television, video, theatre, dance, internet or video games, and most pertinent here, contemporary scores for silent film. Nevertheless, adding music to comic books and graphic novels—when not transformed into film or animation— provides unique challenges and opportunities.
Wordless! (2013), a project I worked on with Art Spiegelman, the Pulitzer-prize-winning author/artist of Maus (1980), In The Shadow of No Towers (2004) and the co-editor with his partner Françoise Mouly of Raw magazine (1980-1981), gave me the opportunity, after a career in creating scores for film, silent film, theatre, dance and television, to work on a hybrid genre that had not been invented yet.
This article is a discussion of the music for Wordless! focusing on relationship between comics and time, the practical and artistic challenges of the score and the ongoing investigation of the relationship between image, narrative and sound.
