Abstract |
This paper argues that the alternate history of Watchmen, a celebrated comic book series by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins, effectively explores the highlighted aspects of its theme – the abuse of power by real-world leaders and comic-book superheroes – for the reason that the imaginary universe of the series merges a representation of real-world America with that of the imaginary superhero universe, giving rise to an emergent representation: a blended universe in which real-world politicians regularly interact with fictitious superheroes. The goal of this paper is to provide a characterization of the emergent universe of Watchmen with a view to demonstrating the unique suitability of its structure to the expression of the main theme of the series. This goal is accomplished with the use of the theoretical apparatus provided by Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner’s (2002) conceptual blending theory. As for its composition, this paper is structured along three parts: the first part provides an overview of blending theory, the second part describes the mental spaces functioning as the inputs to the Watchmen blend, and the third part characterizes the universe of Watchmen as a single-scope integration network.
