Abstract
El Refaie discusses three authenticating cues in autobiographical comics:
  1. Authentication through physical resemblance, seen as part of the “autobiographical pact” in visual media
  2. Authentication through visual style, in autobiographical comics often demonstrating a “deliberate artlessness” in order to convince the reader of “the artist’s genuine characteristics and intentions”
  3. Authentication through documentation, often photographs as a medium commonly understood as conveying ‘truthful’ images
