Abstract
The graphic novels of the «Corto Maltese» series by Hugo Pratt draw themes and settings from the genre of the adventure romance: Pratt often alludes to writers like Defoe, Stevenson, and Kipling. Hugo Pratt’s relation to his sources is, however, far from uncritical. With a blend of realism and irony, and an innovative use of plot and graphic representation, Pratt’s narratives establish a critical relation with colonial romance and its ideological underpinnings, articulating a post-colonial perspective and undermining national identities.
