The links between comics and non-graphic literature have recently become a relevant – and much disputed – matter of study. Postmodernist fiction, which developed in the United States after the Second World War, materialized from the same cultural and social background that generated comics; it related especially to superhero comics not only through the appropriation of themes, characters, ideas, and events, but also by re-adapting narrative structures and textual strategies typical of comic books, such as the violent juxtaposition of scenes and the use of stratified frames. On the other end, the techniques adopted by postmodernist fiction contributed, in the Nineties, to the evolution of comics into the graphic novel form.
