The depiction of violence in literature usually is closely connected to the evocation of fear and similar feelings on the reader’s side as well as it can cause consolation and lead to safety when violence is required to surmount dangers and obstacles. When using words and images to tell a story, like comics do, the narrative in general tends to increase its suggestive qualities and it depends especially on the visual design, how a violent act can be understood and how it can be judged. The chapter intends to analyse the interplay of pictorial and verbal elements in several examples from different comic genres of different cultural origin in order to find out their particular strategies of the mise en scène of the violent action.
