Abstract |
The photographic novel is in various ways an unusual genre. Historically speaking, it seems to ignore much of the internal and external changes of other related genres. Sociologically speaking, it is a rare example of a popular genre which has never met cultural legitimization. And from the point of view of intermediality, it continues to suffer from many misunderstandings, all of which tend to confuse the photographic novel with either comics or film-novels. This chapter discusses some of the difficulties that burden the genre’s reading, while proposing some ideas to enable a better understanding of the singular ways in which it departs from the usual relations between words and images in visual storytelling.
