“Art of a different kind is used to serve an individual’s purpose, as outlined by Richard Gid Powers in ‘Myth, Ritual and the Comic Strip G-Man,’ the purpose being J. Edgar Hoover’s intention to base a comic strip hero on the exploits of the FBI. But this would not work, as Powers points out, for when the image of the real-life Bureau departed from the action detective formula, the Bureau risked losing its popularity, just as the FBI’s official comic strip lost its audience when it lost touch with the action detective formula.” (Ray B.
