Abstract |
This chapter offers a reading of Josh Neufeld’s A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge, a webcomic-turned-graphic novel that provides an oral history of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in New Orleans. It examines how Neufeld revises “official” images of the tragedy by viewing them through the perspective of individuals and by turning to sound and video recordings as well as online discussion threads. The chapter shows how the graphic novel challenges the received narratives of Hurricane Katrina and suggests the limits of official discourse to represent trauma on such a large scale. Furthermore, it highlights Neufeld’s attempt to further the critical discussion of how the suffering of others might be ethically represented and read—especially when the representation deals with strongly contested discourses such as race and region.
