Abstract |
Chris Ryall is the Chief Creative Officer (CCO) and Editor-in-Chief of San Diego-based IDW Publishing, as well as an Eagle and Eisner Award-nominated comic book writer and editor. Since he joined IDW in June 2004, the publisher has gained market share each year and has grown to become the fourth-largest comic book publisher. In undertaking this interview I was concerned to explore a range of topics and issues, including his career trajectory to date and what’s involved in his roles as CCO and Editor-in-Chief of IDW Publishing, as well as questions relating to how social media has changed the landscape for contemporary comic creators, the importance of IDW’s Artist’s Edition line and the San Diego Comic Art Gallery in relation to comics history, ways in which new talent should set about breaking into the comic industry, and IDW’s creative philosophy and core brand values.
