Partant du constat d’une présence obsédante de la Grande Guerre dans les bandes dessinées de Jacques Tardi, cet article revient sur la genèse de son œuvre afin de mettre en évidence les imbrications initiales entre sujet et médium d’expression et de mieux comprendre les enjeux de cette création. De ses premiers travaux à Putain de guerre ! (2008–2009), la Première Guerre mondiale – véritable objet de réflexion – s’est imposée et transformée sous son crayon et sa plume, véhiculant une histoire du conflit qui oscille entre récit documentaire et reconstruction imaginaire, élaborée à partir de son histoire familiale et de son orientation idéologique libertaire.

The nagging war in Jacques Tardi’s work. Noting the haunting presence of the Great War in Jacques Tardi’s comic strip books, this article studies the genesis of his work in order to highlight the initial intermingling between subject and medium of expression, and, thus, leads us to a better understanding of the stakes of his work. From his early books to Putain de guerre ! (2008–2009), the subject of World War I – a real food for thought – imposed itself and evolved under his pen and quill, conveying a history of the conflict vacillating between documentary account and imaginary reconstruction, built from both his own family history and his libertarian ideological orientation.
