This chapter examines cultural authenticity by focusing on the faux memoir and interpretive uncertainty in the collaborations of Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, including Violent Cases and Mr. Punch. It argues that the deliberate obscurity of the two books is less common in Gaiman and McKean’s other comics collaborations such as Black Orchid and Signal to Noise. It also considers the books’ use of an approach to meaning and memory that is reminiscent of what Tzvetan Todorov calls the fantastic. In addition, the chapter describes the persistence of blurring, collage, and distortion in Violent Cases and Mr. Punch.
