Abstract
[Abstract in English below]

Inspired by the Nouveau Roman, Martin Vaughn-James creates The Cage in 1972, the first graphic novel to implement ce processes of self-engendering a story through images. In this book-machine, the mechanisms of the mise en abyme refer the reader to the construction of the story by accumulating and combining materials, objects and spaces. Although the novel doesn’t have any characters, the author’s figure is sketched by the clues on the pages. In the course of reading, the new reader-investigator is also challenged to redraw the effects of intertextuality and to find the exit from this visual maze.
