The comic strip—which began its career as a circulation builder for turn-of-the-century newspapers—is now an omnipresent element in our massive American popular culture, and has lately been the subject of much angry controversy. Heinz Politzer here examines the comic strip as a popular art form that in its own way illuminates some of the essential areas of American life and character.
