Abstract
This essay explores how French comic strips (BDs) have been marked by contemporary trends in the historical memory of the Vichy regime. It offers an interpretation of BDs in the light of Henry Rousso’s famous study Le Syndrome de Vichy. In so doing, the essay introduces British and North American readers to sources which are little known beyond Paris and Brussels and that are normally overlooked by students of French literature, ‘with a capital L’. The BD sources suggest that much of Rousso’s work is plausible. However, they also point to new issues that are worthy of reflection in the study of the processing of Vichy memory.
